Love Lectora: Offset From Bottom
This is one of those features that got added into Lectora while we were in the middle of a busy project. I had a cursory glance at it and because I couldn’t see an immediate benefit and being short on time, I disregarded it.
Until we started changing our page layouts. Then it became indispensable.
What is Offset from Bottom? The Offset from Bottom feature enables you to position your objects relative to the bottom of the page.
The beauty of this feature is if you need to make your pages longer, any objects that are Offset from Bottom stay the same distance from the bottom of the page no matter how long you make it. This then becomes a very handy feature if you have different pages lengths and have objects that need to stay with the bottom of the page e.g. a banner that sits at the bottom.
How does it work? Lectora calculates each object’s X and Y coordinate from the top left corner. When you select this option it changes the value of the Y coordinate. This new value is calculated on the object’s current position on the page and the height of the object.
For example, in the screenshot below we have a text box that is not set to Offset from Bottom:
The page is 500 pixels in height
The text box has a Y coordinate of 200 pixels, relative to the top of the page
The text box is 100 pixels in height
When you select the Offset from Bottom option the Y value changes to reflect the object’s position from the bottom of the page and includes its height.
Where can I find it?
This feature can be found under the Position and Size tab for most objects.
Anything else I should know? Alongside the Offset from Bottom feature is also an Offset from Right. This feature works in exactly the same way but instead of aligning to the bottom of the page and including the height of the object, the Offset from Right aligns to the right of the page and includes the width of the object, see screenshots below:
The page is 500 pixels in width
The text box has a X coordinate of 200 pixels, relative to the left of the page
The text box is 200 pixels in width
Let us know in the form below. Happy Offsetting!
